Gavin Creel Career

Creel’s professional career began in regional theater. Some of his earliest credits include being a member of the resident cast of Pittsburgh CLO, a repertory theater, for the 1997 and 1998 seasons; mostly in ensemble roles, he appeared in Kiss Me Kate, La Cage aux Folles, and On the Town. Other recent stock theater credits include productions in Massachusetts and New York state. Following graduation, Creel played Nick Piazza in the opening cast of Fame’s 1998 national tour. The tour visited cities such as Toronto, Washington, D.C., and Chicago from 1998-1999. Following the tour, he worked in regional theater before relocating to New York City in the early 2000s.

Creel made his Broadway debut in 2002 in the original production Thoroughly Modern Millie, playing Jimmy Smith opposite Sutton Foster’s Millie Dillmount. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his breakthrough performance. Following his departure from the show in April 2003, he appeared in Stephen Sondheim’s Road Show, then titled Bounce, and recorded the original cast album for Bright Lights, Big City, among other productions and workshops. He made his screen acting debut as Bill in the 2003 film Eloise at the Plaza and its sequel Eloise at Christmastime. Throughout the production, he played Jean-Michel. He made his West End debut in Mary Poppins in 2006.

Creel appeared in several productions of The Book of Mormon from 2012 to 2015. In 2012, he made his debut as Elder Price in the show’s First National Tour. He later played the role in the musical’s original West End production, for which he received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2014, the most prestigious theatrical award in the United Kingdom. He returned to the touring production for several months after his West End run before joining the Broadway cast in 2015. In the 2016 Broadway revival of She Loves Me, Creel played the suave salesman Steven Kodaly opposite Jane Krakowski.

He began playing Cornelius Hackl in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, starring Bette Midler, in 2017. Creel received the 2017 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his performance. Creel played Dr. Pomatter in the Broadway production of Waitress in 2019. He went on to play the role in the West End production of the musical, alongside Sara Bareilles. Creel appeared in two episodes of American Horror Stories on FX on Hulu in 2021, alongside Matt Bomer and Sierra McCormick. Also in 2021, Creel appeared in Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice, a self-described “concert-cal” for which Creel was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to write and perform the book, music, and lyrics. In 2022, Creel appeared as The Wolf and Cinderella’s Prince in the New York City Center Encores! production and subsequent Broadway revival of Into the Woods. He will reprise the role in the 2023 national tour
