He worked as a researcher in the mayor’s office in order to pursue a career in public service. He also worked as an evaluator for the San Francisco Model Cities program for a short time. He quit his job as an evaluator to study acting at the Black Actors’ Workshop. He performed in plays such as Macbeth and Suicide in B Flat at the workshop. He made his acting debut in the 1979 film Escape from Alcataz, playing an anonymous inmate. His outstanding performance in Athol Fugard’s play The Blood Knot in 1980 established him as a stage actor. In 1982, he appeared in Master Harold… and the boys, written by the same playwright.
He established himself as a versatile actor, playing roles in a variety of genres with equal ease. The sweet-natured cotton farmer in Places in the Heart (1984), a corrupt cop in Witness (1985), and an abusive husband in The Color Purple was among them (1985). Glover was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor – Miniseries or a Movie for his portrayal of African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela in the 1987 TV film Mandela. During this time, he also directed Lethal Weapon (1987), Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), To Sleep with Anger (1990), A Rage in Harlem (1991), Grand Canyon (1991), and Bopha! (1993).
In 1994, he made his directorial debut with the short film Override. In the same year, he co-founded the Robey Theatre Company in Los Angeles with actor Ben Guillory. As an executive producer for his former production company, Carrie Films, he produced several films. He has also done voice work in several children’s films. His performance in Freedom Song, which deals with issues of race and oppression, demonstrated his acting prowess. The following year, he appeared in the film Royal Tenenbaums. In the low-budget horror film Saw, Glover played a detective. In 2009, he starred in The People Speak, a documentary feature film based on historian Howard Zinn’s A People’s History.
