It is a component of the S& P 500 Index and the seventh-largest retailer in the United States. Target was founded in 1962 as a discount division of Minneapolis Dayton’s department store. It began expanding the store nationwide in the 1980s as a division of the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. It introduced new store formats under the Target brand in the 1990s. As a market participant, the company has found success as a cheap-chic brand. The parent company changed its name to Target Corporation in 2000, and it sold off its final department store chains in 2004. In the early 2010s, it was hit hard by a sizable, widely reported security breach involving customer credit card information as well as the demise of its short-lived Target Canada subsidiary, but it recovered with the help of its expansion into urban markets in the US.

Since September 2015, Cornell has been a member of Yum! Brands’ board of directors. He has served on the board since 2015 and is the chairman of the Retail Industry Leaders Association.
Cornell took over as chairman and CEO of Target in August 2014, succeeding Gregg Steinhafel. Cornell’s leadership is both data-driven and practical. Cornell oversaw the closure of the loss-making Target Canada. Cornell has brought in a number of outsiders to modernize the corporate culture. Cornell will occasionally visit a Target store to speak with customers. CNN named Cornell “Business CEO of the Year” in 2019.
