Patty self-released her debut album, For My Friends, and executives at Singspiration! Records purchased it. In 1979, she signed with Singspiration! and released her debut studio album, Sandi’s Song. According to the FAQ section of her website, Sandra Patty is the name on her birth certificate. The printer spelled her name incorrectly as Sandi Patti on the label. For the next fifteen years, she went by this name as her stage name before changing it to Sandi Patty. Patty began singing backup for Bill Gaither and the Bill Gaither Trio after winning her first two GMA Dove Awards in 1982. Her career grew as a result of this.

Her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was included in the ABC Statue of Liberty re-dedication broadcast on July 6, 1986, and she headlined her first national tour in 1984.
