Rich is the meteorologist for KING 5 Mornings. He has over four decades of weather forecasting experience. He has worked as a meteorologist for KING 5 for over 31 years. Rich began his career at NWAC, where he spent 15 years. He spent 12 years of his 15-year career as a forest service meteorologist stationed at the National Weather Service Office in Seattle. Rich and his team’s job was to provide detailed mountain weather and avalanche forecasts to government, private, and public agencies. He also teaches avalanche courses and installs some of the Northwest’s first remotely telemetered mountain weather stations.Marriott while at NWAC, the job took him into the red zone at Mt. St. Helens where he and NWAC co-founder, Mark Moore, provided avalanche hazard information to the scientists working on the volcano. While at NWAC he had an opportunity to work with Harry Truman, the 33rd president of the United States.
Marriott also took part in working for the UW as a Station manager for the Blue Glacier Research Project in the Olympic Mountains. In this capacity, he maintained a research facility at the 6,800-foot level on Mt. Olympus and carried out research in glaciology, climatology, and meteorology. As part of this, he was occasionally involved in helping with search and rescue and educational programs for Olympic National Park. Over the years Rich Marriott worked as a consultant in weather and avalanche planning. Marriott is still actively involved in the snow and avalanche community as General Secretary of the Steering Committee for the International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW) – one of the leading international conferences on these topics.
Marriott met all of the local TV weathercasters, and for reasons that elude him, longtime Seattle weathercaster Harry Wappler suggested he try it. He managed to land an interview with KING 5 some how. Even stranger, he was hired to do their weekend evening newscasts. He worked for both NWAC and KING for three years. Finally, he was offered a full-time position working weekday mornings. Marriott received an Emmy award for his report on climate change. Rich is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, and the American Meteorological Society, as well as a Broadcast seal holder. Marriott is also a professional member of the American Avalanche Association and an Emeritus Board Member of the Friends of the Avalanche. Marriott has also co-authored research papers in scientific journals, including Nature, Annals of Glaciology, Journal of Geoelecticity and Geomagnetism, Solar Physics, and others.
