Al Sharpton was a popular preacher in his community, even though he was only 14 years old. He’d also become involved in the ongoing civil rights movement, joining the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). One of the organization’s main goals was to promote workplace equality by putting pressure on business organizations, both socially and financially. Al was an essential member of the SCLC. When he was 14 years old, he was appointed youth director of the Operation Breadbasket organization. He was a senior in high school at the time. In the early 1970s, he actively participated in protests against the A&P supermarket chain as part of his group’s anti-corporate activities.
He founded the National Youth Movement. It was established to assist the black population of America in combating rampant drug use and to provide financial assistance to ghettos. In 1971, he became a nationally recognized figure when he publicly urged black people in Harlem not to celebrate Christmas and instead to participate in the Kwanza celebration, a traditional African annual festival. In the early 1970s, it was renamed the United African Movement. Al Sharpton claimed that it was the largest anti-drug movement in the country, with over 30,000 members working day and night in 16 cities.
Al has also dabbled in electoral politics on several occasions without success. He ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in 1988, 1992, and 1994. In 1997, he ran for the position of Mayor of New York City. He ran again for the Republican presidential nomination in 2004, but was defeated. He has been hosting Al Sharpton’s radio show Keepin’ It Real. Furthermore, he is a host on television news shows such as PoliticsNation and Morning Joe. Throughout his career, he has appeared on numerous television shows, including The Morton Downey Jr. Show, I Hate My Job, and Saturday Night Live.
