Selma Blair is an actress from the United States well known for her roles on the WB sitcom Zoe, Duncan, Jack, and Jane, and in the cult film Cruel Intentions. She has also appeared in the comedies Legally Blonde and The Sweetest Thing, and in the big-budget fantasy films Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

Selma Blair Family
She is the youngest of Judge Molly Ann (née Cooke) and Elliot I. Beitner’s four daughters. Her father was an attorney, a member of the Democratic Party in the United States, and a labor arbitrator until his death in 2012 at the age of 82. Blair’s parents divorced when she was 23 years old, and she later legally changed her surname. Katherine, Elizabeth, and Marie Beitner are her three older sisters.
Her father and maternal grandfather were Jewish, but her maternal grandmother, who was Scottish, was Anglican. Blair was raised Jewish and formally converted to Judaism as a child; her Hebrew name is Bat-Sheva.
Selma Blair Education
Blair attended Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills, a Jewish day school, and Cranbrook Kingswood in Bloomfield Hills shortly after. She attended Kalamazoo College for her freshman year, where she studied photography and performed in the play The Little Theater of the Green Goose. She wanted to be a ballerina and a horse trainer at the time. She moved to New York City at the age of 20 and lived at The Salvation Army.
She studied acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory, the Column Theatre, and the Stonestreet Screen Acting Workshop in addition to NYU. She later returned to Michigan to complete her studies. After transferring from NYU, she earned a magna cum laude degree in photography, psychology, and English from the University of Michigan in 1994. She then moved back to New York to pursue a career in the arts.

Blair’s childhood sweetheart died in a car accident when she was 18 years old in 1990. Blair married writer and producer Ahmet Zappa (son of musician Frank Zappa) on January 24, 2004, at Carrie Fisher’s mansion in Beverly Hills, California, after six months of dating. They lived in Los Angeles in a 1920s-era home they purchased in 2004 for $1.35 million. On June 21, 2006, she filed for divorce from Zappa, citing “irreconcilable differences.” A spokesperson for the couple told People magazine, “Selma and Ahmet have decided to divorce, but they love each other very much and will remain close friends.” The divorce was finalized in December 2006.
Blair dated Mikey Day, her Kath and Kim co-star, from 2008 to 2010. Blair began dating fashion designer Jason Bleick in 2010. Her representative announced in January 2011 that she was expecting her first child, and their son was born in July of that year. They announced their divorce after two years in September 2012.

Blair revealed in October 2018 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in August of that year. For years, she assumed she had minor illnesses or a pinched nerve, but the diagnosis finally explained her disabilities, which included occasional falling, dropping things, foggy memory, and her left side “acting like it was asking for directions from a broken GPS.” She was moved to reveal the news as a way to express gratitude to Allisa Swanson, her costume designer, who had become her unofficial “dresser” for her role in the Netflix series Another Life. Blair wrote about her MS experiences in her memoir, Mean Baby: A Memoir of Growing Up, which was released in May 2022.

She appeared as Cecile Caldwell, based on Cécile Volanges in the 1999 American teen romantic drama film Cruel Intentions. Sebastian Valmont, Kathryn Merteuil’s stepbrother, is a notorious womanizer. She appeared as Jane Baker in the 1998 American crime film Brown’s Requiem. Fritz Brown is a disgraced former LAPD officer who now works as a private investigator, part-time repo man, and recovering alcoholic. She appeared as Dr. Kate Wales, Charlie’s ex–therapist colleague and casual sex partner in the American television multi-camera sitcom Anger Management. The story revolves around Charlie Goodson, a former minor league baseball player who struggled to advance due to recurring anger issues. Charlie was able to get his issues under control and finally make it to the major league’s thanks to a therapist, Dr. Kate Wales. But he relapsed during a big league game, breaking a bat over his knee in rage and injuring himself for the rest of his career.
