Allen made his professional debut in 1998 in You Are Here, a one-off Channel 4 comedy co-written by Matt Lucas and David Walliams. Allen and his sister Lily appeared in Elizabeth, a 1998 film produced by their mother. His early credits include small roles in Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London, directed by his uncle, the film Atonement, and as Nobby Clark in BBC1’s historical hospital drama Casualty 1907. Allen co-starred in the Madness music video for “Dust Devil” in April 2009, alongside then-partner Jaime Winstone. He also appeared in Freefall, a BBC2 film. In 2010, he continued to appear in films, including Soulboy, The Kid, Freestyle, and Powder.

Allen rose to international prominence in 2011 after being cast as Theon Greyjoy in HBO’s Game of Thrones, an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Originally auditioning for the role of Jon Snow, he went on to become a series regular for eight seasons and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the show’s final season in 2019. Allen first appeared in the British thriller Confine in 2012, and then in the 2014 film John Wick, opposite Keanu Reeves. He produced Football: A Brief History, a two-part documentary for the History Channel about the origins of association football. That same year, he starred as Ringwood in a BBC Two miniseries set in the 1940s.

Allen co-starred as Lynch in the 2018 sci-fi sequel The Predator, as Finkel in Taika Waititi’s Oscar-nominated dark comedy Jojo Rabbit, and as John Kite in the 2019 coming-of-age film How to Build a Girl. In the third series of the period drama Harlots, he played Isaac Pincher. Allen played Brett Collins in the ITV crime drama White House Farm. Allen made his Broadway debut in 2022, replacing Dan Stevens in Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen at the John Golden Theatre. Allen was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He’ll play Jock Lewes in the BBC One World War II miniseries SAS: Rogue.
