Marilu Henner was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 6, 1952, to Loretta Callis and Joseph Henner. Her father was Polish and her mother was Greek. She is the third child out of five siblings. Her mother was president of the National Association of Dance and Affiliated Arts for 20 years and ran the Henner Dance School.

In 1980, Henner married actor Frederic Forrest, whom she divorced in 1982. She later married filmmaker Robert Lieberman, with whom she divorced in June 2001. She began her career appearing in the original production of the musical Grease in 1971, before making her screen debut in the 1977 comedy-drama film Between the Lines. She made her film debut in ‘Between the Lines,’ and her second film, ‘Bloodbrothers,’ was released in 1978. In the same year, she landed her breakthrough role in the popular sitcom ‘Taxi,’ in which she played Elaine O’Connor-Nardo, a single mother and cab driver who wants to pursue a career in the fine arts. She stayed in the role for five seasons. She landed the leading female role in Wim Wenders’ 1982 film ‘Hammett.’ The following year, she co-starred with Burt Reynolds in Blake Edwards’ ‘The Man Who Loved Women.’ In the same year, she also appeared in ‘Cannonball Run II.’
‘By All Means, Keep Moving,’ her autobiography, was published in which she revealed her relationships with many of her ‘Taxi’ co-stars, including Tony Danza and Judd Hirsch. Her book ‘Marilu Henner’s Total Health Makeover’ was published, followed by ‘The 30-Day Total Health Makeover’ in 1999 and ‘I Refuse To Raise A Brat’ in 2000. She also appeared in the film ‘Man on the Moon,’ about comedian Andy Kaufman. The critically acclaimed film was directed by Milo Forman. She also dabbled in reality television, hosting the PBS show ‘America’s Ballroom Challenge’ from 2006 to 2007. In 2008, she competed in the celebrity edition of Donald Trump’s ‘The Apprentice,’ making it to the eighth week before being fired.
She has written nine books on health, diet, and memory, the most popular of which is ‘Total Health Makeover.’ She also teaches healthy eating classes online through her website, www.marilu.com. She is also the host of the television show ‘The Art of Living.’ She hosts her own show, ‘The Marilu Henner Show,’ which airs on various radio stations across the United States.
