Access Industries paid $5.7 billion to Royal Dutch Shell and BASF in August 2005 for the petrochemicals and plastics manufacturer Basell Polyolefins. Basell completed its acquisition of Lyondell Chemical Company on December 20, 2007, for an enterprise value of approximately $19 billion. LyondellBasell Industries, the resulting company, went on to become the world’s eighth-largest chemical company by net sales. LyondellBasell Industries’ U.S. operations declared bankruptcy on January 6, 2009.
LyondellBasell emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 30, 2010, in a significantly improved financial position.
