Love then graduated from Prairie View A&M University in Texas with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. She minored in music and was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Eta Beta chapter while at Prairie View. After winning a $50 competition, she discovered stand-up comedy and performed frequently during her undergraduate years.
She continued to do stand-up after work in clubs and became a regular at the Laugh Factory after finding work as an engineer at Xerox in California. After eight years with Xerox, Love resigned to pursue comedy amid a layoff in order to save someone else’s job. Love hosted the VH1 series I Love the 2000s, in which she discussed pop culture highlights. She also appeared on the late-night talk show Chelsea Lately as a panelist. On July 24, 2000, Love participated on an episode of Supermarket Sweep.
Love began her comic career in 2003, after going on Star Search and reaching the finals before losing to eventual winner John Roy. She has since appeared in other films and television shows. Love was dubbed a “Hot Comic” in Campus Activity magazine in 2009, as well as one of the “Top 10 Comics to Watch” by both Variety and Comedy Central. At the 2003 US Comedy Arts Festival, she received the Jury Prize for best stand-up. In 2008, Love joined CNN as a journalist for D. L. Hughley Breaks the News and covered President Barack Obama’s inauguration. Love recorded her debut one-hour Comedy Central special, America’s Sister, in late 2009, which premiered on May 8, 2010.
