It was time to say my final goodbyes to the BBC after twenty years as a journalist. She is presently a contributing writer for the Atlantic and a Carnegie Endowment for International Peace non-resident senior fellow, traveling between Beirut and Washington, D.C. Her urge to discover solutions to the chaos around her motivated her to become a journalist when she was 13 years old. She began her career in journalism as an intern at Beirut’s local English-language newspaper, The Daily Star, in 1998. Within a few years, she was reporting for the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant, as well as the Financial Times and the BBC.
She reported from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and, of course, Lebanon throughout the Middle East. In 2006, she and her BBC colleagues covered the war between Israel and Hezbollah, and we were awarded a her for international news coverage. She quit her role as a journalist in Beirut in 2008 to become the BBC’s State Department reporter in Washington. She spent six years traveling with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry. She has won awards for her State Department reporting from publications including Monocle.
Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Daily Beast, Time, and The Washington Post. She frequently speaks on Middle East issues and American foreign policy on American television and radio, as well as at special events. She is a trustee of the American University of Beirut, her alma mater, and a beacon of intellectual engagement in the Middle East. She also serves on the board of directors of ARIJ, an organization that trains and supports investigative journalists in the Arab world.
