It was founded by Sarkes Tarzian, an engineer whose corporation controlled WTTV and a number of other Indiana stations. The call letters are based on the initials of members of the corporate executive family, as has been done by other Tarzans for many years. Until the station’s license was formally moved to Fort Wayne in the 1970s, WPTA referred to itself as “Roanoke/Fort Wayne” on the air.
After purchasing NBC station WISE-TV in 2005, Granite sold WPTA to the Malara Broadcast Group for $45.3 million. Silver Point Capital, a hedge fund based in Greenwich, Connecticut, bought Granite stock in 2007. Malara has been suspected of being utilized as a front company to get around FCC duopoly limits. The CW launched on WPTA-DT2 on September 18, 2014. The digital subchannel of WANE-second TV, which had been linked to UPN previous to the network’s bankruptcy, was discontinued on September 5.
