After his redshirt year ended during the 2013 season, Owens played defensive back at Missouri Western State University (MWSU). During his final season at MWSU, Owens was selected Male Student-Athlete of the Year. During the 2017 season, Owens was chosen to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Second Team. Owens was a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll throughout his college career. He majored in pre-physical therapy with the goal of becoming a doctor. Owens signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent after the 2018 NFL Draft. Owens was waived prior to the 2018 season due to an injury sustained during the final week of organized team activities (OTAs), and he spent the whole season on injured reserve.

Owens has been added to the Houston Texans’ practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on November 21, 2019, but was waived two days later and re-signed to the practice squad. He signed a reserve/future agreement with the Texans on January 13, 2020. The next day, the Texans released Owens and signed him to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster for the team’s weeks 5 and 6 games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans, respectively, on October 10 and 17, before being relegated to the practice squad after each game. Owens has been inserted into the starting lineup. Owens was waived and re-signed to the practice squad by the Texans. He was promoted to the active roster on December 4th.
