Muller’s first break in television came when he accepted a position at WTOC-TV, Savannah, Georgia’s CBS affiliate. Muller received an immediate and intensive education in military coverage as he reported on troop mobilizations from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield during the Panama raids and the Persian Gulf War, shooting and editing his own stories in most cases.
After two years, he accepted a reporter position at WBBH-TV, the NBC affiliate in Fort Myers, Florida, where he received the Associated Press’ prestigious “Best Individual Achievement Award” for overall excellence in the state of Florida. His dramatic coverage of hurricanes, including the devastating Hurricane Andrew, was among his most notable work.
His first permanent anchor position was on the weekend anchor desk, to which he was promoted. Muller broke into the “Top 20” market after three years in Fort Myers, catching the attention of WFLA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tampa, Florida. Muller worked at WFLA for three years as the lead reporter on the 11 p.m. news, the state’s highest-rated local news show. He won the Associated Press award for “Best Spot News Reporting” in Tampa. He also filled in on the weekend anchor desk and was the anchor of WNBC’s initial coverage of Princess Diana’s death.
