Since joining ABC’s Los Angeles O&O KABC-TV in 1996, he has interviewed President Barack Obama and covered major international events such as the Boston Marathon bombing, Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s wedding, Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the 2011 Tsunami. ABC7 Eyewitness News, with Ono and sports anchor Rob Fukuzaki, is one of the few news programs in the country with two Asian American male anchors.
Outside of broadcasting, Ono has produced a number of documentaries about the Asian American and immigrant experiences, such as the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII and the Vietnam War’s “Napalm girl,” Phan Thi Kim Phuc. He and Jeff MacIntyre produced The Legacy of Heart Mountain, a documentary about the Japanese internment camp Heart Mountain Relocation Center. He interviewed a number of survivors, including the mother of judge Lance Ito, for the documentary. Ono has three Edward R. Murrow Awards and 16 Emmys to her name. In December 2015, he received the Distinguished Journalist Award from the Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
